The phrase "shabby chic" has taken on many styles as it has become more popular. Shabby chic bedding is often thought of as ruffles and frills, small floral prints and proportional stripes. Many thing of of shabby chic as cottage style. That's close. But where do we begin?
Many think of the style as recycled bedding and furniture. Still others think of shopping for prints, especially the country French style in blues. The truth is "shabby chic" is a romantic and extremely comfortable style that can be easily adopted by almost anyone.
Quite often the bedroom decor begins with what is already there. Or, with many of us it begins with a trip to the thrift store. So, let's get one thing out of the way. Shabby chic begins with a solid foundation, with furniture that is made of solid wood. The furniture is not cheaply made although it may be old. We prefer to think that our shabby chic bedroom began with solid furniture that needed a little help. Distressed furniture is a great way to begin.
A trip to the thrift store can produce a good set of bedroom furniture. Look for a bed and dresser, and maybe a chest of drawers that does not qualify as a real antique. In other words, it isn't quite old enough or in such pristine condition to be sought after by antique dealers. Purchase something you can touch up with a furniture polish or refinisher such as Howard's Furniture Refinisher. (Ask any antique dealer about "Howard's".) And, do not be afraid to buy some paint! The beauty of shabby chic is that it is beginning with something old and making it look fresh and new.

Once the furniture is in place, it is time to go for the bedding. Needless to say, shopping for shabby chic bedding can be one way to go. There are plenty of sheets and pillow cases, comforters and pillow shams to choose from.
Please note that most shabby chic decor has a ruffle or two. The pillow shams are ruffled. And the bed skirt is ruffled. All adds to the soft and comfy effect.
Shabby Chic Bedding has found its way to the kid's room. It is ideal for the little girl in your life. (Available in several bedding sizes.)
Most shabby chic decor depicts a country effect. For example, most bedding has flowers or stripes with flowers between them. We are reminded of a folk print or a country print. Of course, there is always room for grandma's patchwork quilt. Crewel embroidery and quilt fabric are good examples of shabby chic accessories.
One of the most intriguing aspects of this decor is that while most of the bedding seems to have a softer, lighter background, it is quite permissible to paint the walls in a deeper color. That is the beauty of shabby chic --- the blend of soft flowers with the accent coming from the deeper shades.
Shabby chic has found its way into the baby's nursery as well. The Cherry Blossom design is soft and feminine enough for the little girl.
Shabby chic decor is the perfect blend between the new and the old. While we cannot deny that many new bedding ensembles exemplify the best of shabby chic designs, we always suggest that the decorator (you) begin with a piece of furniture or an old quilt that has special meaning. Then, turn the shabby into chic.
