The New Bedroom for Teens: Twin Beds, Twin Bedding

in Teen Bedding

Teens and younger children want a bedroom that reflects their interests.  Even younger children have favorite colors.  And, of course children and teens need space.  Younger children need play room.  Teens need room for a small work area for homework.  One of the best ways to decorate your child's room is by adding a twin bed.  All too often parents think in terms of a double bed for their children, especially their teens.  However, with bedrooms being smaller today than in decades past, perhaps the twin bed is a better for the younger ones.

The variety of bedding specially designed for children and teens has grown over the past decade.  It wasn't too many years ago that solid colored sheets in pink were for girls and blue sheets were for boys.  Today there are patterns and accessories that give the child and the teen the opportunity to set their own bedroom scheme.  Beginning with a twin bed is a great way to get your child interested in expressing himself/herself in his private space, the bedroom.  For boys we have an article on camouflage bedding.

When decorating the teen's bedroom there are a few things to keep in mind.

  • The room should be decorated to their taste preferences.
  • It is not necessary to invest in new furniture when solid wood thrift store furniture will do.
  • Let the teen or child pick his or her favorite colors.
  • Help him or her find a bed in a bag set that will set the theme.
  • Select solid color sheets and pillow cases that will complement the theme.

Twin bedding is actually reasonably priced, especially if you begin with a bed in a bag bedding ensemble.  Most sets contain sheets, pillow cases, a comforter, and some include a bed skirt and sham covers.  Be sure to check to see what is included.  And don't forget to purchase extra sheets in solid colors to add to the theme.  By purchasing extra sheets and pillow cases in solid colors, the room decor will never be without the central theme.

Both boys and girls are into name brands during the teenage years.  The set to the left is by Tommy Hilfiger.  Of course, there are many designers who have put their names on bedding.  That could be a selling point for the teen.

Even the "designer" twin sheets, comforters, and accessories are generally quite affordable.

Teens want and need their space.  Giving them an opportunity to decorate to suit their tastes will allow them to show their creativity and get them involved.  A teen who is involved in selecting his or her bedroom decor will enjoy his or her time in her room, will feel relaxed in the surroundings, and may care enough to keep the room clean!  That's a real plus for moms.

As seen in the examples above, there are basic tenents that are involved in selected bedding for teens (or adults).

  • Begin with three basic colors.
  • Shades of any or all of the three colors can be used.
  • When purchasing a patterned ensemble, purchase additional sheets, pillow cases, and perhaps a comforter in matching solid colors.

Teens can maintain the theme of the bedding ensemble if there are solid sheets and pillow cases that can be used while the patterned bedding is being washed.  All too often kids like their theme decor, but loose the concept when the pieces are in the laundry.  By purchasing twin bedding in solid colors to complement the theme, there is always at least one piece of the set that can be used.  With wise selections, there can be three or four variations on a theme.

With proper guidance, teens will feel the ownership of their rooms.  With a twin bed they will have plenty of room to enjoy their selections.  All kids love to invite friends over for a study session or for an afternoon of computer games.  Help your teen or younger child feel good about himself and his room.  With a twin bed, a work space, and a couple of chairs, the bedroom will become a point of pride for your teen --- and you.

Build your teen's self-confidence and self-esteem by allowing him to decorate his bedroom.  He will take pride in his choices.  Of course, what he (she) learns at home will follow him (her) to college and into adulthood.
