There comes a time in every young lady's life when she wants her room decorated to suit her preferences, to display her favorite colors, and to express her style. It's a natural progression of your teenager's life.
As a young teenager, your daughter will be satisfied with Hannah Montana bedding or some other favorite teen star's design on her sheets and pillow cases. Within a year or two she will be changing her preferences to something more grown up. She will discover her favorite colors and her tastes will drift from Hannah Montana to her favorite male rock star. Perhaps, your daughter will begin to show her feminine side with her preferences turning to lace and pastels. Within a year or two, by the time she reaches high school, your daughter may begin to display her rebellious side, her tastes moving to designs that are beyond a parent's understanding.
The teenage years are years of transition for your daughter. Her tastes will change several times between the ages of 13 and 18. Parents can become baffled by the constant changes in bedroom design preferences. For that reason, there are a few suggestions for parents:
- Work with your daughter to select a color for her bedroom that is mutually accepted
- Suggest a solid color for the curtains or drapes (that can be used in the future)
- Allow the child to express herself with her selection of sheets, pillow cases, comforters, etc.
- Buy a good quality bed from a used furniture store or thrift store.
- Allow the child to paint the bed if she chooses.
- Recognize that teenagers are creative and want to express themselves
- Do not be critical of the teenagers selections... even if you have to bite your tongue.
- Allow wall posters but set limits on how many and how they can be attached to the wall.
There will be enough changes that occur within the relationship between the teenager and parents during those growing years. Do not let the teenagers' "space" become an issue. There is always room for compromise. Giving in a little in this area may encourage the child to express herself and build a stronger bond with her parents.
Teen bedding can be a mixture of colors and styles. Encourage your teenager to select a few solid pieces, such as a sheet set or a comforter. In all probablity your daughter will want to choose a few pieces that will make your hair stand on end. Again, go for compromise. When your teenager decides to decorate her room, it is a wonderful opportunity to teach her about color combinations and style. Do not squander the opportunity, but do not force a choice that is not hers.
