Kids bedrooms, especially bedrooms for teenage girls and teenage boys, are often not as large as the master bedroom. However, these secondary bedrooms are the havens of most children, the place they study, the place they watch television, the place they play computer games, the place they entertain their friends, and the place they sleep.
A colorfully decorated twin bed fit for any little boys room, leaving him plenty of room for toys and play time.
With limited space available children, especially teenage girls and boys, often consider their bedrooms their private domains. We have all seen the posters on the walls of the latest heart throb or the hottest band. These kids want to put their signatures on their space.
Think about it for a minute. The bedroom is the only place in the house that the teenager is given rein to decorate pretty much as he or she pleases. Why not give them the opportunity to express themselves?
First of all, as hard as it may be, allow the teenager to select the color for his bedroom. Of course, a helpful hand from a parent could be an asset. Even if you cringe at the child's choices, his bedroom is the one place he can express himself.
Easy steps to creating a private space for the teenager:
- Well, the first thing is to bite your tongue.
- Let the child select the colors he likes. A trip to Home Depot or a local paint shop is a place to start.
- With the color cards in hand, take him to the bedding store to pick which sheets and pillow cases he/she likes.
- Measure the size of the room and decide which pieces of furniture should be included in the room decor.
As mentioned, most teenagers' rooms are not as large in newer homes today as they were in days gone by. It is necessary to plan ahead.
Some suggestions for furnishings are:
- Desk
- Study chair
- Book case
- Small sofa
- Bed
- Trunk or chest
- Dresser
By now, after considering the furnishings that a kid may want or need, most parents are realizing just how small the room is. At this point, it may be time to consider a twin bed.
Now, you may be thinking you haven't seen a good single bed since the last episode of "I Love Lucy." Wondering where to look?
- Thrift stores
- Used furniture stores
- Auctions
- Antique and collectible shops
Don't panic over the antique and collectible shop idea. You can often find great prices on old furniture that is not in demand. Single beds are not necessarily the hottest item in the antique store.
There is a reason to shop the thrift stores and used furniture stores. Let the kids paint the headboard and foot board. Younger children may want to cover the headboard with stickers of their favorite cartoon characters. Teenagers will enjoy painting their beds. Do not be critical. Some of us enjoyed psychedelic colors when we were younger! And, you can always close the door to the bedroom if the teenager does not.
In some cases these single beds can be bought as a set, two beds. If there is more than one teenager in the house this could be a real bargain. Each child can decorate his bed to suit his tastes. Perhaps, if a set is found the dressing table can be used in a girl's room and the chest of drawers in the boy's bedroom. In other words, two bedrooms can be decorated for the thrift price of a single bedroom set.

With a single bed in an average size bedroom the teenager will have room for a study desk or maybe a bookcase. In some cases, perhaps a small love seat can be purchased to help create a comfortable setting for studying, reading, watching television, or chatting with friends.
If the single bed is used for a younger child, there will be plenty of room left for a toy chest or a trunk. Most younger children will also feel more comfortable in a smaller bed than a double bed during the transition from crib to bed.
The benefits of a single bed in a child's room:
- Leaves room for other furniture
- Gives the kid a chance to express himself or herself. (After all, the bed was purchased at a thrift store, so let them paint it.)
- The mattresses are less expensive.
- Sheets and pillow cases are less expensive.
- The young person will feel as if he is creating his own space.
When it comes to bedding, the child can begin with a bedding ensemble of his choice --- sheets, pillow cases, a comforter, pillow shams. Encourage the young person to select a rather neutral color for the bedding, even a black and white comforter.
Additional sheets can be purchased in bright solid colors. With proper planning, the teenager can have a variety of looks for his/her room. The bedding ensemble will serve as the constant. Colorful sheets and pillow cases will be the variables. As you can see, as a parent you are saving money while giving your child an opportunity to create his or her room.
