Hotel Bedding Has a New Look

hotel bedding has a new look

A couple of years ago hotel bedding was one basic style.  There is absolutely nothing wrong or unappealing about the traditional style, but when considering the crisp look we enjoy in five star hotels we need to think beyond the square panel and traditional appeal.

Traditional Hotel Bedding

traditional navy and white hotel beddingFor years hotel bedding for the home has featured one style — the blocked panel with the panel trim.  Let me say without hesitation that the design is still among the top sellers.  With the two color combination and the crisp lines any home decorator can create a bedroom that always looks neat and organized.  With so many color combinations taupe and black hotel bedding ensemblemost who looked to the design for their decor were sure to find the combination that suited his or her needs.

The traditional style adds a touch of elegance to the simplest of bedroom decors.  Taking a look at the pictures (upper left) one can see the visual appeal of the style.

The fabric texture is smooth, often cotton in a regular weave.  Polyester blends are among other fabric options.  With the variety in fabrics it is easy to see that there can be a wide range of prices.  As with most bedding selections, I suggest that the investment in the bedding be determined by first of all what you can easily afford and the use of the ensemble — master bedroom for daily use or guest room for occasional use.

The Updated Look of Hotel Bedding

updated hotel bedding designOne of the new looks in hotel bedding is the monotone design.  The ensemble is a single color.  The fabric adds texture and creates the subtle pattern.  Taking a closer look at the ensemble to the left one can see that the comforter is striped — not as one would expect maybe, but through the weave of the fabric.

It is still easy to see the crisp lines of the design while enjoying the elegance afforded by the rich textures.  The pillow shams shown at the top of the bed are in a regular pattern that seems to display a small diamond pattern while keeping the look of the comforter.

The solid color is definitely among the most elegant of hotel bedding selections.  Many home decorators prefer the updated look because they feel free to select two colors, should they choose, to finish the bedroom color scheme.

While I am fond of this style, I have yet to incorporate it into any bedroom designs.  The patterns and lines are definitely in the hotel tradition, but for my bedrooms the pattern is too large for the size of the rooms.  If there is a single caution for potential buyers I would suggest that one consider the bedroom size and layout.

How to Recognize Hotel Bedding

One question that has been asked more than once since the hotel bedding collection expanded is how to recognize hotel bedding with all the changes in designs.  My suggestion is to look at it.  I know that is an overly simplistic answer.  But, let’s face it if you take a look at the bedding shown you will recognize clean crisp lines, bold design whether in the pattern or the weave of the fabric.

As one looks at my grouping it is easy to say, “Yeah!  I get it.”  But, the truth is that hotel bedding for the home is expanding so fast that the lines of separation are beginning to blend.  So my suggestion is this.  If you like clean fresh lines look for bedding selections labeled as “hotel bedding”.  On the other hand, if you like the style and the fabric and the texture who cares what it is called?

How to Decorate Around the Hotel Bedding Ensemble

Once you are confident in your hotel style selection, decorating can be quite easy.  There are a few things to remember when decorating around any style:

  • A three color scheme is usually visually appealing.  This gives the ability to run up and down the spectrum of three distinct primary colors.
  • Go with the tone or tint of the primary colors in the bedding.  In other words, if the scheme goes toward the grey select colors from the grey tones.  If the colors tend toward the pure white stick with the pure colors along the spectrum, and so on.
  • It is quite permissible visually to select a floral pattern to be used in the bedroom provided the colors are within range.
  • When selecting a floral pattern be sure the pattern is complementary to the pattern in the bed.  Visual balance and proportion are the keys.

With the basics out of the way, most of us can decorate by visual appeal.  I have found over the years that I get gut feelings about how a room looks.  Many of us have walked into a room and seen something that looked perfect or something that — as my mom would have said — sticks out like a sore thumb.  Don’t try to fudge.

When decorating if you think something almost looks right, it is probably looking wrong.  When in doubt remove the accent that looks almost right.  If the room looks better without it — well, you get the idea.

And, as always, keep it simple.  Everything you have and every idea you have does not have to fit in one bedroom.  When in doubt, don’t.

Happy decorating.
