For the Teenage Athlete, Sports Bedding Is the Answer to His Dreams

The teenage athlete or sports' fan will enjoy a room decorated with his favorite team colors and logos.  If he is into individual sports, his hero has his own colors.  For example, we can always expect to see Tiger Wood in a red shirt for Sunday afternoon golfing.  Most college or professional teams have a two-color scheme that can be easily integrated into the bedroom decor of your young athlete.

Whether your son is a football star in his own right or a fan of his favorite college's team or maybe an NFL fan, there are sheets and pillow cases, comforters and bedspreads that will match the colors of his favorite team or his favorite athlete.

Parents know their children.  Parents know the kid's idol.  But, be sure to check with the child or teenager before making a selection of colors or decor.  Sometimes, especially when it comes to team sports, young people will have one person who is their idol but that person may not play on his favorite team.  Besides, the decor will be in the child's bedroom, so let him choose.

Again, it cannot be emphasized enough that the most pleasant and appealing decoration schemes consist of two predominant colors and an accent color.  This is mentioned only because some sports teams have colors that are certainly almost unimaginable for comfortable living.  For example, although it goes without question that the University of Tennessee has some of the most devoted fans in the country, few of us are willing to live with orange as the dominant color in a bedroom.  Of course, if your child love's UT he may be willing to look at orange both day and night.

Generally speaking, a wise parent can select two colors that are "easy on the eye" and use the third color for accents.  In the case of the orange that dominates Tennessee's color scheme, it could be wise to purchase a few throw pillows for accents and perhaps a comforter that is the combination of orange and white.

The softer shade of blue of the UNC Tar Heels could easily be used as a base color for most bedrooms, leaving the availability of a third color for special accents. In the case of colleges, universities, or professional teams that have more subdued colors, one of the school colors or team colors could be used for the walls.  For example, most kids and parents could live with walls the color of the paler shade of blue worn by the University of North Carolina Tar Heels.

There are a few simple steps to follow when selecting bedroom decor for the sports minded teen.

  • Determine the team or the athlete of focus.
  • Determine the team colors or the colors worn by the athlete.
  • Narrow the focus to three colors. (You can always use shades and hues to soften most colors.)
  • Shop for the sports bedding.
  • Visit a home improvement store to match colors for the bedroom walls. Most paint stores can match the colors if a sample is presented, such as a jersey or a towel from the team.
  • Don't forget the accent pieces and pictures.

With those few ideas in mind and the input of the teen, a well designed bedroom can be created that is appealing to parent and child.

For the Star Athlete in the Family

Some of our children are stars in their own right.  If you have a son or daughter that excels in sports, their team colors can be used.  While it is doubtful that most high schools have the array of team memorabilia that can be found with professional sports, solid color bedding is available in most colors.  Certainly something close to your teen's school colors can be found.

With a little bit of creativity, a team emblem can be added to a solid color throw pillow.  Or a dust ruffle combined with a bedspread or comforter can depict the colors of your daughter's soccer team.  Give the teen the opportunity to help create the accent pieces.

As a bonus, take a good quality picture of the teen in his or her uniform.  Most photos can be sufficiently enlarged to make a poster of your child to hang in his or her bedroom.  Maybe a team picture that has been enlarged to poster size will add to the room decor.

Remember, the bedroom of the teenager is his or her domain.  Give him a chance to take part in the decoration of his room.  He will take more pride in it and probably keep it a little cleaner than he would otherwise.

As always, when purchasing bedding, it is suggested that you purchase sufficient bedding to mix and match.  Especially if selecting sports bedding, it is important to have solid color sheets or pillow cases.  With an extra set of sheets, pillows cases or even a comforter the room can consistently carry off the theme --- even when one set of bedding is being washed.

Of all the teens we have worked with, especially the young men, most gravitate towards a bedroom decor that reflects his sports interests.
