Little boys want to be just like their dads. In their minds, their dads are the world's greatest soldiers, the world's greatest hunters, and the world's greatest campers. Young boys want to do everything their dads do. For those children who have fathers who are in the military or fathers who take them to the Boy Scout meetings, camo clothes are all the rage. Why not dress up the child's room in the same decor?
Do not think in terms of "olive drab" when you think of camo. Think in terms of the wonderful blends of greys and greens if you are going with the jungle motif or the light browns, the tans, and the beiges if you are thinking of a sand camo motif. Both the green shades and the tan shades are very masculine and will make the little boy think he is the little man. Perhaps, the best place
to begin is to show the youngster the colors. Let him choose between the greens and greys and the tans and beiges. He will enjoy the room more if he gets to pick a few of the colors. With the variations in camo colors and designs today, there is something that will appeal to your little one.
Once the basic color has been selected pick the lighter shade to paint the walls. It is important to remember that the lighter the color for the walls, the larger the room will look. Of course, we have only offered two varieties of camo colors. There are hundreds more.
There is even a camo that is described as "suburban camouflage." (to the right) Note there is a hint of peachy pink in it so it could be suitable for Daddy's little girl.
It is important to note that all the camouflage bedding should be purchased at one time, perhaps as a bedding ensemble or as a bed in a bag. As seen from these few examples, there is such a variety of patterns and colors that once you leave the store it will be difficult to match the exact bedding again.
If purchasing the bedding ensemble, it is suggested that you purchase an additional set of pillow cases. And, don't forget, flat twin bed sheets make inexpensive curtains for the youngster's room while maintaining the theme. Additionally, most camouflage is dark enough that it would help keep the glare of a street lamp or an outdoor light from disturbing the little one's sleep.
On other option is to go to an army surplus store for your camouflage. We have found many interesting ideas for youngsters in those stores. In addition to some of the bedding pieces selected, we discovered trunks that are Army green that made wonderful chests for toys. We used one of the trunks to store the comforter and other bedding since most children do not have ready access to a linen closet.
If there is a bathroom that adjoins the child's room, do not forget to carry the theme from the bedroom to the bath.
From start to finish
- Select the bed for the young boy. (See the value of purchasing a twin bed from a thrift store.)
- Select the camouflage of choice from the bedding store or the surplus store.
- Decide on the color for the bedroom.
- Once the initial choice for bedding has been made, select sheets and pillow cases and a comforter in a solid color that will complement or match the camouflage bedding.
- Decide on additional pieces of furniture. Again, we suggest the surplus store or the thrift store.
A bunk bed or a twin bed is ideal for the young boy. The twin bed will probably be more useful in the long run unless there are two boys sharing a room and there is a need to conserve space. The twin bed, if painted in one of the camouflage colors can be repainted when the youngster tires of the camo theme. A solid wood, well constructed bed from the thrift store can be used throughout the child's years at home. It can be used with the wood finish if it is in good shape with little damage to the surface. Otherwise, painting is always an option. The advantage to painting is that as the child's taste changes the colors can be changed.
Other pieces of furniture can be used in a wood tone or can also be painted. Remember, it is not necessary to have all the painted pieces the same color, especially when using the camouflage theme. Regardless of what grandmother and mother wish to believe, most children do not want to take their childhood bedroom furniture to their first apartment. Be wise, buy inexpensive well constructed furniture that can withstand a growing child and can find its place in storage or back in a thrift store when the youngster out grows it.
As for the bedding, if going with the camouflage theme, do not limit your selections. Most camo has at the very least a three color pattern. Selecting solid color sheets in each of the colors in the pattern will offer a change of sheets and pillow cases while maintaining the integrity of the theme.
